Spinal Tumors : Debunking

A spine tumor is an extra growth of tissue mass that can develop anywhere near the spinal cord or within the bones and discs of the spine. Spinal tumor can either be cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign).

Types Of Spine Tumor

Spine tumor has been identified to be of 3 different types –

  1. Vertebral Column Tumor

Vertebral column tumor generally involves the bones of the spinal cord. Most of them are metastatic in nature. That is, the tumor originally develops in some other part of the body but eventually spreads to the vertebral column. They are called metastatic tumor.

There is another type of vertebral column tumor which arises from the bone or cartilage tissues of the vertebral column. They are called primary tumors.

  1. Intradural – Extramedullary Tumor

These tumors develop in the dura mater which remains enclosed within the bony casing of the spinal. Meningiomas and nerve sheath tumors comprise the majority of intradural – extramedullary tumors.

Meningiomas arise from the thin membrane called the dura mater. Whereas, nerve sheath tumors, namely, schwannomas and neurofibromas, arise from the nerve roots that leave the spinal cord.

  1. Intramedullary Tumors

These tumors usually grow on the cells that provide physical support and insulation to the nervous system called glial cells.

In general, the following are the most common symptoms that might signal a case of spinal tumor.

  • Pain at the site of the tumor, especially, in the back or neck region. The pain does not seem to reduce even with rest.
  • Neurological issues like loss of sensation and muscle weakness.
  • Loss of appetite leading to weight loss.
  • Change in usual pattern of bowel movements and urination.

Surgical Treatment

Surgery may be performed depending on the type of the tumor and the condition of the patient. The success rates of spine tumor removal surgery in India are pretty high great hospital facility and availability of modern medical equipments in the country.

In case of metastatic tumors radiation of highly focused beams are generally used to disrupt the tumor cells and shrink it in size.

Surgery is generally considered for tumors which destabilize the structure of the spine or compress it. After the removal of the tumor, bone grafts and metallic implants are often used to restore the stability of the spinal cord.

For both intradural extramedullary and intramedullary tumors, the goal is to surgically remove the tumor completely while aiming to preserve as much of neurological functions as possible. However, if the tumor cannot be removed completely, they are usually treated with radiation or chemotherapy after the surgery.

A patient may have to stay for about 15 days in the hospital after the surgery. However, most patients need some rehabilitation like physical therapy after the surgery which might extend their stay at the hospital. In case of radiation or chemotherapy, the patient need to visit the hospital frequently at regular intervals. The total recovery time can range from 3 months to a year depending upon the complexity of the surgery. The price of the surgery is estimated to start at USD 4,800 in India. However, tumor on spine surgery recovery cost in India can depend highly on the postoperative treatments and medication required by the patient.
