Syphilis is a curable infection, especially during its primary and secondary stages. When it goes to its tertiary stage, it is more difficult to treat this. A syphilis treatment will be successful with just a single dose of penicillin. It is given in one of the largest muscles in the body like over the arm or buttocks through an injection. But anyway, how can you possibly get this kind of infection? What are the causes of this disease? Before digging deeply into its treatment, you have to know first what this disease all about. As you heard, prevention is better than cure.

Syphilis Overview

Syphilis is an STD or a sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by an infection with bacteria called Treponema Pallidum. This disease is endemic and can be spread by any type of intercourse, just like STD. Syphilis can also be carried by the fetus from an infected mother during her pregnancy. This disease has been characterized for centuries. If it is not properly treated, it can cause long-term damage to your organs. The bacteria that causes this infection are referred to as spirochetes because of its spiral shape. It has organisms that penetrate into the genital area. When this infection is untreated, it progresses and shows signs and symptoms through various clinical stages. The symptoms will usually develop at around 21 days after the first infection. But they may also appear from 10 to 90 days to the following infection.

About Primary Syphilis

The primary stage of syphilis is identified by the form of a painless ulcer called chancre. The pain starts to develop at the infected site and is typically solitary. The chancre is composed of the infectious bacteria. The condition is highly contagious as long as the sore is still there. Spreading the infection is possible with any contact with the chancre. If by any chance this disease is spotted in the mouth, therefore kissing can definitely be the cause of spreading the infection. It could last for about 3 to 6 weeks and just usually goes away by its time and on its own. Using condoms cannot guarantee you to be safe or excused from this disease. If it happens that chancre is located on the part of your body where it is not covered by it.

About Secondary Syphilis

Secondary syphilis may develop if you missed primary syphilis to get the treatment. This stage of illness typically occurs after the primary stage or weeks to months. It is characterized by skin rashes but never gives any itchiness to your skin. On this stage, the infection is spread all over the body. So you will expect some signs and symptoms that will show. However, there are other symptoms that may be combined with the skin indications. These are the examples of some symptoms that have been reported in the second stage of this disease:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Hair loss
  • Weight loss
  • Headaches
  • Muscle aches
  • Enlarged of lymph nodes

Sooner or later, these symptoms will decrease. But, if the secondary syphilis stage is not taken into its proper medication, this will progress to tertiary syphilis.
